From Tired to Timeless: Transforming a Period Front Entrance with Bespoke Joinery
First impressions matter — particularly when it comes to period homes. A front door is more than simply an entrance; it sets the tone for the entire property. Recently, we had the opportunity to completely transform a weathered and dated entrance into a warm, elegant and contemporary feature while still respecting the character of the original building.
The result is a striking example of how thoughtful bespoke joinery can modernise a home without stripping away its heritage.
The Original Entrance
The original doorway certainly had character. Traditional leaded glass panels, aged timber framing and rustic ironmongery gave the entrance an unmistakably cottage-style appearance. However, years of exposure to the elements had taken their toll.
The timber surround showed visible weathering and deterioration in several areas, while the smaller leaded side windows restricted natural light entering the hallway. Although charming, the overall appearance felt dark, tired and slightly disjointed.
Like many older properties, the entrance had good bones — it simply needed careful design, craftsmanship and modern functionality to unlock its potential.
The Design Approach
Rather than replacing everything with something ultra-modern and out of place, the aim was to create a balanced design that would:
Retain the property’s period character
Improve natural light
Enhance kerb appeal
Introduce cleaner architectural lines
Use high-quality bespoke materials and joinery throughout
This is often where bespoke craftsmanship makes all the difference. No two homes are the same, particularly older properties, and off-the-shelf solutions rarely achieve the right fit, finish or proportions.
The Transformation
The most dramatic change came from replacing the original leaded side panels with large clear glazed units framed in beautifully crafted timber. This immediately opened up the entrance, allowing significantly more light into the property and creating a brighter, more welcoming feel.
The new bespoke oak front door introduced a cleaner and more refined aesthetic while still maintaining traditional detailing through carefully selected ironmongery and subtle panel work. The vertical grain and warm natural tones of the timber bring both elegance and texture to the space.
Importantly, elements of the original structure were retained where possible. The herringbone brick panels beneath the windows were preserved, helping maintain the home’s original charm while contrasting beautifully against the new joinery.
The result is an entrance that feels:
Brighter
More spacious
More secure
More valuable
Architecturally cohesive
The Importance of Bespoke Joinery
Projects like this highlight why bespoke joinery continues to outperform mass-produced alternatives in period and character properties.
A bespoke approach allows every detail to be tailored specifically to the building:
Exact dimensions
Proportional balance
Material selection
Glazing style
Hardware choices
Structural integration
It also ensures a far higher quality finish, particularly around awkward openings, ageing structures and uneven surfaces commonly found in older homes.
Balancing Heritage with Modern Living
One of the challenges with period renovations is modernising a property without losing its identity. In this case, the refurbishment successfully walks that line.
The entrance still feels appropriate for the age and style of the house, but now delivers the practicality and visual refinement expected from a modern bespoke installation.
Natural light has been dramatically improved, the craftsmanship is immediately visible, and the entire frontage now feels intentional and premium.
Final Thoughts
A front entrance refurbishment may seem like a relatively small project, but its impact on a property can be enormous. It affects kerb appeal, day-to-day experience, perceived quality and even property value.
This transformation demonstrates how carefully designed bespoke joinery can completely redefine the appearance of a home while respecting the building’s original character.
